APRIL 6, 2007 – “WHERE DOES GOD FIT INTO YOUR FAMILY?”

 

TEXT: Joshua 24:14-15

 

I.                   CHOOSE TO GIVE GOD THE PLACE HE DESERVES  IN YOUR FAMILY

 

(Joshua 24:14a) “Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness.”

 

(Matthew 7:27) “The rain came down, the stream rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

 

(Joshua 24:3) “But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the River and led him throughout Canaan and gave him many descendants.”

 

(Joshua 24:5) “Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I afflicted the Egyptians by what I did there, and I brought you out.”

 

(Joshua 24:8a) “I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived east of the Jordan. They fought against you, but I gave them into your hands.”

 

(Joshua 24:13) “So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.”

II.                CHOOSE TO MAKE ROOM FOR GOD TO BE GOD IN YOUR FAMILY

 

(Joshua 24:14) “Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshipped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.”

 

(Joshua 24:19b) “He is a holy God; he is a jealous God.”

 

(Genesis 35:2) “So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, ‘Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes.’”

 

(Genesis 35:4) “So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem.”

 

(Exodus 20:3) “You shall have no other gods before me.”

 

(Mark 12:30) “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”

III. CHOOSE TO BE A FAMILY THAT SERVES GOD REGARDLESS OF WHAT OTHERS DO

  

(Joshua 24:15) “But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

 

(Joshua 24:15a) “…then choose for yourselves…”
