WEEK 1: DEVOTIONAL ON PRAYER

“Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” Matthew 18:19-20

There is no room for self-centeredness in prayer. Selfishness in prayer robs prayer from reaching outside the walls of our own selves. Self is the thief of prayer that robs it from reaching its full potential. Corporate prayer calls me to move past my own limited prayer agenda and join with others. Corporate prayer keeps our praying from being selfish. Selfish prayers are quickly exposed and evident when we are praying openly with others. It expands the focus of my prayer, enabling me to reach beyond the boundaries of my own desires and concerns.

Corporate prayer is prayer engaged by two or more persons, for the purpose of focusing upon one or more specific needs. Corporate prayer is the opportunity to come together to focus on a specific issue. It is joining in agreement with others who have God’s heart.

Praying in the will of God together in a sense binds God to answer their request. This paradox is holy ground and requires a delicate balance of thought between divine sovereignty and human freedom. The scope of the promise is breathtaking. The “anything” in prayer is a strong statement of assurance that God hears the prayers of His children. God answers the united concern of praying people.

To meet together in the name of Christ is to meet in the knowledge that they belong to the risen Christ and are praying in His presence. The Lord really does come to every prayer meeting He is invited to attend: He is the source of the power of prayer. It is the presence of Christ that makes prayer effective.
