Nazarene Compassionate Ministries
With sores all over his body and losing weight rapidly, 12-year-old Bongani joined the Nazarene Child Development Center in Manzini, Swaziland. It was the first time that he had been a part of any educational activities since his mother and father had died. His grandmother, who gave Bongani a home after he was orphaned, had no money to take care of his medical needs, let alone send him to school.
When the child development staff first visited Bongani's house to learn about his situation, they offered him an opportunity to enroll in a program that would provide physical, emotional, social, and spiritual development activities. Since then, the church has also paid for Bongani's school fees and school uniform.
The program in Swaziland works hand in hand with the Nazarene AIDS Task Force made up of volunteers, mostly women, who address many aspects of the AIDS pandemic in their community, including caring for orphaned children. Because they believe in holistic care, the staff also took Bongani to the hospital to attend to his evident medical needs. There, Bongani found out that he tested positive for HIV. Now, in addition to going to school, he also receives nutritional food supplements and iimmune booster medication from the Nazarene clinic.
Stories like Bongani's - of sadness, hope, and redemption - may be common in NCM's Child Development Centers, but they are not ordinary. We don't take for granted the miraculous nature of God using the church to share hope in desperate situations.
We inivite you to continue joining Nazarene Compassionate Ministries in witnessing to the love of Christ.
